The headline, "Dreaming of a Sather-Free Rangers" makes it all the funnier considering Kipper's contract is exactly what Sather would dole out.

How is it exactly what Sather would dole out? Kipper has a cap hit of less than six mil and is a workhorse.
And Joe, sure NHL10 should be kind, but playing behind a defense with Phaneuf, Bouwmeester, healthy Regehr and Sarich will be as well ... not to mention the solid skills of former Ranger Freddie Sjostrom helping kill penalties ... meanwhile Mr. Backstrom, selected right after Kipper, will be exposed for the fraud that he is now that Lemaire isn't there and he has a fat contract to sit back on.

Kiprusoff has been living on reputation alone for the last 2 seasons.

From my email exchange with James on the pick:
"Kipper could bounce back, but even a bounce back for him would just get him to "above replacement level", and not to "real good goalie". For the cap hit, that's an indefensible pick. Considering the draft slot, its even worse. There's no way you could ever possibly justify Kipper being the 20th best player in the NHL or the 20th most valuable player in the NHL or whatever else. Backstrom is a bit better, because at least he doesn't suck, but the same thing applies. In terms of value for getting the chance to choose the 20th or 21st best or most valuable player in the league, that is an absolutely atrocious return.
I guess a lot of it also depends on how you're building your team. If you look at this purely from a fantasy hockey perspective, guys like Backstrom probably improve, because all that matters is the results. If you look at just winning the NHL10 competition, Kipper will probably be stupidly overrated by EA, so he ends up better than he should be."

The defense in front of Kipper could help him have a much better season.

While, in reflection, I wish I went with a different netminder, the call was made and I stand by it. Trash all you like now, I will be laughing in the end ...
